Ram C. Acharya
Economist, Researcher, and Writer on Prosperity, Institutions, and Opportunity
I am an economist and former Canadian federal public servant with research interests in productivity, innovation, trade, institutions, and economic development. Through this website, I share research, commentary, and reflections on Nepal, Canada, and the broader question of how societies create opportunity and prosperity.
Current Focus
My current work explores three related questions:
- Why has Nepal struggled to translate political change into sustained economic prosperity?
- What explains Canada’s recent productivity slowdown despite strong institutions and human capital?
- How do institutions, markets, and public policy create opportunity and prosperity across generations?
Through research, commentary, and long-form writing, I seek to understand how societies help ordinary people develop their capabilities and convert effort into lasting progress.
Beyond research and writing, I enjoy engaging with students, young professionals, and others interested in economics and public policy. Engaging with people who are curious about economic questions, public policy, and the forces that shape prosperity has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my career.
